Buy stamps from an unauthorised outlet and you risk buying counterfeits, warn customs officers.

The warning came after a Chinese man was jailed for importing 75,000 fake New Zealand stamps worth $150,000 earlier this year.

Three packets, each containing 25,000 $1.50 and $3 stamps were seized at the Auckland Mail Centre and Li Wai Man was jailed for 2-1/2 years.
