FIRST ISSUE OF POSTAGE DUE STAMPS (1924 to 1936)
Type B1 : Combination Use of Stamps and pre-stamp cancellation - used in all three states.
B2 : Use of normal F.M.S. Stamps - used in all three states.
C. MALAYAN POSTAL UNION PERIOD -
USE OF M.P.U. POSTAGE DUE STAMPS (1936 to 1942)
Postage Due - The payment of postage by the recipient of a letter for insufficient postage paid by the sender usually at twice the insufficient postage or more, is uncommon. Statistically, less than one-tenth of a per cent of mail would have insufficient postage. This makes the collecting of postage due covers and the study of them both interesting as well as challenging - interesting in that a wide range of cancellations are used and hitherto unrecorded, and challenging because the survival of the covers of the early period is limited and in many instances extremely rare.

Because of the above factors, the study of this aspect of postal history by stamp collectors has been limited. It will no doubt grow in popularity as stamp collectors are attracted to the challenge of discovering new cancellation types, or new uses of postage due stamps. The rarity of some of the cancellations will make the effort worthwhile.

A guide to rarity is provided for collectors on prestamp covers through the indication of number of covers seen by me for each type of cancellation.

If this study attracts further investigations by other collectors, it will be possible to revise a rarity rating in a few years time.

The condition of the cover is important to its value. Most covers seen are from poor to fair condition only.

The 1981 Stanley Gibbons Part 1 Stamp Catalogue lists postage due stamps on covers for the first time, in terms of the number of times of catalogue value of the normal used stamp. It is again important to re-emphasize that the condition of the cover affects the value, together with the postmark and tax mark cancellation. This listing by Stanley Gibbons on the value of these stamps on covers will no doubt attract more collectors to include covers in their collections.
