Fig 4: Larger miniature sheet showing six vignettes |
The 35th International Fair was held at Budapest from April 26 to May 6, and a stamp display was organised within the exhibition by the philatelic handbook publishers, Bélyeggyüjtök Zsebkönyve. A miniature sheet of six stamps was issued to celebrate other anniversaries as well as the centenary (figure 4). The anniversaries are 500th Birthday of King Mathias, 100 Years of Stamps, 500 Years of Printing, 25 Years of the Airmail of Przemyal (both balloon, aeroplane, and cannon for the Siege), 20 Year Rule of the Regent Horthy, and finally a propaganda stamp that states 'stamps are national property,

collect them'. The miniature sheet is on buff paper, but individual stamps can be found perforated, usually on white paper (figure 5). Finally, another miniature sheet was produced (figure 6) carrying the wording 'Gutenberg Emlékkiállitás'. |

The fourth exhibition was held in the Vigadóban Restaurant, Budapest from May 19 to 23. It was organised by MABOE (Magyar Amatör Bélyeggyüjtök Országos Egyesülete), the Hungarian Amateur Stamp Collectors' Association. Coin-cidentally, a new 20f + 50f charity stamp was issued on the opening day to raise money for the recent flood victims, and a special card was issued (figure 7) that had attached a commemorative vignette for the 17th Day of the Stamp (started in 1923). The special card was postmarked with the official air mail handstamp obtainable from the Budapest Post Office for airmail items. The commemorative vignette can be found printed in red, dark blue, turquoise, brown, red-violet, brown-violet, ultramarine and green.

They were printed in sheetlets of four vignettes, with the colours the same diagonally across the sheetlet i.e. two colours per sheetlet. The organisers attempted to capitalise on a number of parallel events, and so the vignettes also commemorated the 4th National Stamp Exhibition, the Centenary of the Penny Black, and the 17th 'Day of the Stamp'. Finally, there was issued imperf vignettes with '1840 - 1940' printed on
them (figure 8) in green, violet, blue and brown.

To conclude this study, we should also include the vignettes produced and distributed free by Samum Altesse, a cigarette paper manufacturer from Budapest. They produced imperf stamps (figure 9) that were included in packets of cigarette papers. The vignettes were gummed and thus were attached to many items of mail. In addition, a miniature sheet dated Budapest 1941 (figure 10) was issued, probably still in 1940. |
