As a security measure at the end of the opening meeting of the Congress the printing plate was defaced in the presence of the audience. Yes, you guessed correctly! There were (a number of) pulls taken from the defaced plate before that in turn was destroyed, and we illustrate a superb sheet printed from this plate. This particular example is the only one we have ever seen, but we would be very interested to hear of any more that exist.
Finally we illustrate a photograph of the Congress Committee taken at the opening meeting. They are, from left to right, J. Henniker Heaton, MP; The Earl of Crawford, Franz Reichenheim, H. L. Hayman, H. A. Slade, Baron A. de Worms, J. Dunbar Heath, M. P. Castle JP, C. R. Sutherland and Major Edward B. Evans. It is difficult to envisage these stalwart gentlemen being described as 'somewhat boisterous'! |
